VOORHEESVILLE – Mark Steven O’Brien, 57, of Voorheesville entered his eternal adventure on Friday, July 8, 2011. He was a master stone mason and quarryman. He oversaw the Middlebury College, VT stone renovation, Northern Dormitory. He was an artist with stone, landscaping, and gardening. He loved being in nature, but he wasn’t simply an outdoorsman, he was a survivalist. So much so that some of his nieces and nephews referred to him as “the Man that Walks in the Woods.” He hiked the entire Appalachian Trail (2,179 miles from Maine to Georgia) and lived off the land and in a tent for periods of time. He was an expert trapper, loved to hunt deer, catch fish, and watch birds. Among his favorite places were the Catskill Mountains, the coast of Maine, and the Pepacton Reservoir. Mark had a strong faith and love for God. He had a tender heart for young people and took time to listen and pass on what he had learned in life to them. Mark faced his final days with an amazing amount of courage and grace. One of his favorite sayings, which was tattooed on his left wrist, was Y2J which means “Yield To Jesus!” He had an infectious smile that will be missed greatly by all who loved him.
Mark loved his family deeply and was greatly loved in return. Mark was preceded in death by his father, Harold J O’Brien, Jr. Survived by his mother, Betty J Tompkins and his second mother, Sylvia O’Brien. The love of his life, Jean Lisa and her girls, Nichole (Matt), Heather, and Heidi. His sons, Shannon O’Brien and Christopher Stevens, his three grandchildren, Brittany, Logan, and Ella (Nicole). His siblings, Bruce (Nancy), Linda (Art), Jodi (Bob), Robin (Tom), David (Linda), Lisa (Bill), Karen (Johnny), Lance (Jennifer) and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
At Mark’s request, there will be no funeral services. Memorial donations can be made to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy at www.appalachiantrail.org or The Mt. Moriah Children’s Home in Kenya, Africa (Mt. Moriah Ministries, 262 Rt 9W Glenmont, NY 12077).
