COEYMANS HOLLOW – Alva “Alvie” L. Shear, 83, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 13, 2016. Son of the late James and Alice Shear, Alvie was born on September 29, 1932. His career spanned many years at the Blue Circle Cement Co. in Ravena where he retired after 35 years.

Alvie loved his job and his friends. So much so that after he retired, every Wednesday you would find him at the local diner with his former co-workers for breakfast sharing a laugh and a cup of coffee.

Alvie’s skills are countless. His masteries include, carpentry and taping, grill master, pizza chef, and clam shucker.  And, if he didn’t want to make it, no worries, he would tell you how to make it.

Alvie enjoyed the home he built.  He especially enjoyed watching the sun rise in the morning, tending to his vegetable garden, and greeting the deer, bunnies, and frequent groundhogs and chipmunks that would welcome him. One of his hobbies was collecting pocket knives, which represented countless countries. His guitar was very special to him, not only because of his days playing it with his brothers and when he was in the Ray Jones Country Band, but because he would also play it for his sweetheart, Kay, his wife of 35 years.

Alvie’s greatest love was his family.  He was a dedicated family man, devoted husband, and man of integrity. He asked for no attention. He would rather do for others than have done for him. His spirit, compassion, and love for all he held special will greatly be missed.

Alvie’s survivors include his beloved wife Kathryn “Kay” M. Shear; children, Scott Shear, Sandra (Tim) Blenis, Kathy (Lloyd) Ellis, and Dan (Lisa) McCarthy; brother, Jerry Shear; and six grandchildren. Alvie was predeceased by his first wife, Georgia Shear; daughter, Susan Shear Papas; and brother, Mosher Shear.

Per Alvie’s request, there will no viewing hours, and services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Alvie to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Road, Albany 12205 or Mohawk and Hudson River Human Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Menands, NY 12204.
